If you are reading this post, you are probably wondering “How can I make money as a stay-at-home mom?”
THE JOURNEY TO CHOOSING STAY AT HOME JOBS
My journey to working from home began with the same question shortly after returning to my job, after three months of maternity leave. At the time, my husband was on paternity leave and we had done all the responsible things to find a quality childcare facility. Even so, I was not ready to leave my baby with strangers – even if they were well qualified.
What I wanted was the option to continue doing work that I enjoyed while contributing financially to the household, without needing to sacrifice being the primary caregiver for my child during most of the daylight hours. It took some time and creativity but I finally found a way to make an income, on a flexible schedule, that was a good option for a manageable family life and my own well-being.
“I hope you get the opportunity to choose whether you want to be a working mom or full-time homemaker, I’ve done both and neither is without it’s challenges. The biggest blessing is having the choice.”
Whether you are looking for legitimate full-time work from home ideas or a perfect side hustle that is part time, this is the post for you.
Below is a list of stay at home job opportunities for you to consider to make extra money on your own schedule with the base resources of a laptop/computer, an internet connection, determination, and creativity.
WORK FROM HOME JOB IDEAS FOR MOMS {OR ANYONE}
1. Blogging
If you don’t know how blogs make money, you may have the urge to roll your eyes and quickly move to the next option. But..hear me out.
Some blogs are just online journals where people are happy to share their daily adventures; however, many blogs are profitable and their owners have figured out how their websites fit into a larger business model.
I created the video lesson below to explain how blogs fit into profitable online business models. Check it out.
The main thing to know is that to make money you are typically using your platform to sell advertisement space, digital products, sponsorships, services, and/or other people’s products (affiliate marketing).
I’m not going to pretend it’s easy or quick to grow a money-making blog; be wary of anyone promising money and success overnight. But this blog and others that you may read is proof that with time, persistence, and the right tools, a blog can help you bring in lunch money, bill money, mortgage money, and perhaps even more!
Examples of Profitable Mom Blogs with Income Reports:
- What Mommy Does – $7,000+/mo
- The Realistic Mama – $24,000+/mo
- The Busy Budgeter – $86,000+/mo
- Easy Baby Life – $4,000+/mo
- Fit Mommy in Heels – $11,000+/mo
- Another Mommy Blogger – $3,000+/mo
Resource:
If you are interested and ready to give blogging a try, I highly recommend Suzi Whitford’s FREE Bog Plan and her affordable suite of beginner blogging courses. Suzi has the heart of a teacher and doesn’t charge thousands to teach you the basics of starting a profitable mom blog. Blogging is not a get rich quick scheme and may not be the best option if you need extra income immediately but if you are willing to be put in consistent work blogging is a great option. There is no application process and you get to work when you can carve out free time.
2. Teach English Online
You can teach English online, even if your educational background isn’t in teaching.
Between stints of school and working in the lab, I had the opportunity to teach English at home (USA) and abroad (Czech Republic). These were in-person experiences but now, we have the option to teach English from the comfort of our home.
The requirements for some of these opportunities require that you are a native English speaker, hold a college degree in any subject, and some may require a TEFL certification. I earned my TEFL online several years ago through i-to-i, it was not a difficult or time-consuming process so don’t let that requirement turn you away from teaching – if you are interested. It’s a good fit if you don’t mind being on camera and need flexible hours.
Resources:
iTalki: Teach any language with no contract on your own terms.
Preply: Teach a language or be a tutor in other categories.
*Consider your current time zone and the one required to be available for teaching.
3. Online Jobs Tutoring
If the idea of teaching online was interesting until you read ‘kids’, ‘degree requirement’, or ‘English’, don’t throw in the towel just yet. You can make money tutoring different age groups, without a degree, and in some cases, you can choose the subject you teach.
There are companies online that offer the opportunity to teach art, math, music, play-doh sculpting, animals, writing, other languages besides English, and much more! The flexibility of topics to consider is great because this can be your chance to share your passion with children and/or adults and get paid to do it – on your own time! To teach children, expect to undergo a background check. I completed the requirements to teach on Outschool and it was a process that took a few days.
Resources:
Outschool: Teach a variety of topics with no degree. *I sign my kid up for classes on this platform all the time. It’s great for young children.
Allschool: This learning platform is similar to Outschool. No degree is required for educators and there is flexibility in the class topic and you choose the time you teach.
Cambly: Tutor with no degree or prior experience.
Wyzant: Tutor a variety of topics.
4. Customer Service Representative
Have you ever been frustrated while trying to get assistance from a company over the phone? Well, you can become the excellent customer service rep you wish you had.
There are hundreds of companies that supply work from home customer service jobs. Finding the companies that are legit and with reasonable hiring requirements can feel challenging but once you have a position, you can enjoy working completely remote from your living room.
Resource:
Conduent is a company that helps other companies outsource their work and provides several remote opportunities. As of the initial writing of this post, *Conduent provides employees the necessary equipment (computer), training, and benefits after 90 days.
*This information is subject to change at any time. Please contact the company for the most up-to-date information.
5. Virtual Assistant
If customer service is your vibe but you prefer to be more on the tech side of things, consider being a virtual assistant. Use your skillset to help others get things done in their business.
Things you can do as a virtual assistant include:
- Social Media Management: scheduling, posting, answering direct messages, and more
- Basic Administration: Data entry, managing calendars, managing emails, setting appointments, helping with travel and more
- Creating Content: Writing website or blog posts, creating Pinterest pins, creating Instagram photos, online courses
- Editing: Videos and photos in platforms like Adobe
- Advertising: Google Ads, Facebook Ads
- Email Marketing: Create emails and email funnels
- SEO: Help people with search engine optimization
- Moderate online community groups
- Help with product launches
Virtual assistant tasks will vary depending on the person or the business you are serving but there is flexibility and often times opportunities to enhance your technical skills. Most importantly, the more you learn about the business and serve, the more you can add value and potentially increase your income without leaving home!
**The more niche and unique your skillset the better for scaling your income. 😉 Become the expert at what you do.

6. Course Creation
If you already have a community or a group of people who know you have a valuable skill, consider creating a course.
What do I mean?
My husband and I used to travel extensively using airline miles and our friends and family would constantly ask us how the miles programs worked and how to get the best value for traveling with bonuses and incentives. Verbally, trying to answer these questions was tiresome and required time. So. We created a mini-course and shared with family and friends. Once, we got their feedback to make it better, we began to charge for the course.
Now, we share our love of early education and teaching English on our English Confetti site.
What do you know that the people in your life want to know?
Do not underestimate what you know. It can be anything like knitting, crocheting, or even raising chickens!
Resources:
Check out course creation platforms including: Teachable, Podia, Thinkific, Teachery
**You’ll want to have an audience or a group of people you know are interested in your course topic before creating a large time-consuming course.
7. E-Commerce Dropshipping
If you have never heard of dropshipping don’t feel bad. Dropshipping is a way to sell products directly to people/customers without ever having to store the product in your home. The products are stored in warehouses and in some cases, the product doesn’t even get printed/created unless someone buys it.
Here’s an example:
- You create a design to put on a graphic t-shirt.
- You use a platform like Printify to design the shirt.
- Printify is responsible for printing and delivering your shirt to your customer.
- There is a cost to you to print the shirt but you sell the shirt for more than Printify charges you. This is where your profit comes in.
- The product never sits in your garage, living room, or basement.
As someone who is committed to reducing waste I love this concept.
**There are tons of little considerations that make a big difference including product, product quality, product safety, and trustworthiness of dropshipping supplier (just to name a few) but the overall the low barrier of entry and the multitude of possible products that can be dropshipped make this a great option for your work from home situation.
Resources:
You can quickly create a e-commerce dropshipping store by pairing products from a dropshipping supplier with platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, and Etsy (check limitations as Etsy is a marketplace for handmade goods).
8. Sell on Etsy
If you are crafty, then you may not need a supplier to making money online. Etsy is great platform to showcase your homemade and handmade goods.
I’m always impressed at the vast amount of creativity that comes from the seller’s on the platform.
- Ideas of things you can sell:
- Art: Paintings, drawings, canvas
- Crafts: knitwear, knit blankets
- Printables: Calendars, planners, journals, education
- Linens: towels, blankets, sheets, duvets
- Toys: wood toys, homemade play-doh, crayons
- Candles: natural candles
- Seasonal Decor
Heck. This list can go on forever. If you have the skill, visit Etsy and see if others are selling those products too. If so, this is a great thing! It means there is a market for your craft.
*Don’t choose not to create your shop because there are a bunch of other shops. You are what makes your handmade craft unique. Go for it! Plus, getting started selling on Etsy is extremely affordable.

*Tip: There will be courses that offer to help; however, I recommend learning from the tutorials on the platform first. They want you to be successful because if their sellers aren’t selling, they aren’t reaching their ultimate earning potential.
9. Self-Publish on Amazon
Not crafty? No worries. You can sell your knowledge on Amazon.
My husband is a die-hard, never-miss a game, basketball loving, Duke men’s college basketball fan. One weekend, he sat down and wrote a ebook and I suggested he add it to the Amazon Marketplace. His first sell came from someone in Europe! To say he was excited was an understatement.
But, here’s the thing.
If you love something or struggle with something, there is a huge probability that you aren’t alone. There will be others who want to hear about the topic and you can create something that is exciting to read like a basketball ebook or something that helps people solve the problem you had.
Example: You struggled with procrastination but using a planner changed your ability to manage your time effectively. You can share your story and create planners to sell.
*Tip: Volume is important for profitability if trying to sell something on Amazon KDP. Be sure to do some research on your topic and the type of marketing that may be required to reach your selling goals.
Resources:
You can create your book in programs like Word (Microsoft), Pages (Apple), or Canva (Online). Then, self-publish ebooks and paperbacks on with Amazon KDP.
10. Freelance Write
If you enjoy writing there are platforms, magazines, newsletters, journals, and websites in various categories like travel, science, medicine, and education where you can specialize.
Niche writing is most likely where you can make the most money, but when beginning it can be helpful to explore several areas to determine what you enjoy.
You can begin on your own platform/website to show your writing skills. As you get work, build your portfolio. Some people get consistent contracts with 1-3 companies; others prefer to work with new clients for each new assignment. Find what works for you.

11. Proofread
Perhaps you are a reader and not a writer and you cringe at grammar and punctuation mistakes. You can take your grammar and proofreading skills and turn them into money!
Your pay will most likely be determined by your skill level but this is a great stay at home job for moms who are introverts and like to help people fix their writing mistakes.
Resources:
- Beginner Proofreaders: There are platforms like ProofReading Services. You can also reach out to bloggers and freelance writers on the platforms where they hangout like their own blogs and websites, Contenta, Facebook groups, and other community groups.
- Experienced Proofreaders: Proofreading Pal
- Beginner and Experienced: List your services on Fiverr, and/or Upwork,
12. Transcribe {Transcription}
While computers are getting really good at converting words into text, there is still a need for humans in the field. That’s where you can make bank.
Become the person who helps lawyers, science professionals, musicians, video creators, vloggers, teachers, or any digital creator turn their words into text.
Why? Well.
Text and subtitles are still important for large portions of the population. They aren’t just useful for people who want to watch things while at work. ✋I’ve been that girl.
If you can type quickly and accurately and manage your own productivity well, there are companies who need you.

13. Virtual Bookkeeping
If you are capable of being extremely organized, detail-oriented, efficient, and effective at managing administrative and financial activities for others, you can consider bookkeeping.
Bookkeepers keep records, document, track, and categorize daily financial transactions for businesses, they are not accountants. And, unlike accountants, “You don’t need any special training to be a bookkeeper—you don’t even need a bachelor’s degree” {Bench}; however, you will likely need to be dependable and proficient with data entry while also having knowledge of programs like Quickbooks and Excel.
Resources:
14. Remote Online Notary
Your state laws will determine your ability to practice as a remote online notary but I wanted to add this one to the list because it works well for some people willing to become a traditional notary. Once you become a notary, you may be able to transition to being a remote notary making money without needing to leave the house.
Notary signing agents typically review home loan documents with clients and witness them sign. As a signing agent you are likely to be an independent contractor who will get paid based on the number of signing assignments. *Be aware that many states limit the fees that can be charged and therefore profitability is often based on travel fees that you can charge clients.
Recently, due to the events happening in the world with the pandemic, there has been an increased interest in remote online notaries and notarization.

15. Sell Clothing
As mamas, we have children who are constantly outgrowing their clothing. As consumers we often have clothing in our closet that we haven’t worn or can’t fit 😕 . It’s possible to turn those items into cash.
The quickest thing to do is list these items on Facebook marketplace but also consider yard sales, local consignment shops, and online platforms specially for selling used clothing.
There is a limit to what we have of our own to sell but if you want make this a gig, you can find ways to acquire more clothes from friends, family, yard sales, and local second-hand shopping.

If you have a smartphone, you likely have a photo library filled with photos.
Perhaps, it’s time to upgrade to a digital or mirrorless camera improve your photo quality so that you can sell photos to stock photo sites. Stock photos are the photos that digital creators use in their content that they get from online photo databases. I like to use Unsplash and Pexels.
When people sell their photos and make them available to digital creators, they save us time while still allowing us to have epic pieces of content.
You may be thinking what can I take photos of? The answer is anything including:
- Food
- Animals
- Nature
- Toys
- Home Decor
- Books
There are digital creators in every space looking for photographs.

You Can Make Money Working From Home – Remotely
While I was transitioning from career woman to homemaking and homeschooling mama, I went down a rabbit hole of figuring out what legitimate work I could do to earn money without leaving my baby; my path lead me to digital creating, teaching, and blogging. Before motherhood, I hadn’t given these ideas much thought but now my main goal is to continue on this work path so that I can control my time.
