In this post, you’re going to learn how to make your own gel hand sanitizer.

At the time of this posting, much of the world is concerned about the coronavirus that causes COVID-19; it has quickly become a serious health concern for certain demographics and an economic hardship on small and large businesses.

People are wearing masks, avoiding public areas, limiting physical contact, and using disinfectants to try and protect themselves and their families.

While some of these measures are impactful, others are not and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC) is putting out extensive information with recommendations on how to protect our families and communities from COVID19.

The one measure I’ve personally noticed more is the increased interest in hand sanitizers.

↠Last week, I was at my brother’s military graduation and after he shook hands with dozens of his fellow graduates, he was my side asking for hand sanitizer. The line of people who wanted to use it quickly grew.

↠This week, when I picked up my toddler from school, at the front door was a large bottle of hand sanitizer. I get it. Once a disease or virus impacts one kid, it can potentially impact them all.

Germs and viruses have always been there but our awareness is at an all-time high! This is understandable, especially for families caring for young children and the elderly – like so many of you.

The interest is so high that some retailers and establishments are selling out of cleaners, disinfectants, and hand sanitizers. Really.

Thankfully, you can make your own with just three ingredients.

BASIC DIY GEL HAND SANITIZER INGREDIENTS:

1. ↠Alcohol {Isopropyl} //  1 Cup

    • Alcohol is the most important ingredient as it dissolves the outer coating of viruses and bacteria.
    • Ensure your alcohol product has a high percentage of alcohol (60% or more).

2. ↠Aloe Vera Gel // 1/2 Cup

    • You can use store-bought or natural aloe vera.

3. ↠Essential Oil  // 15 Drops

    • There are antibacterial essential oils and essentials oils you can add for natural fragrance.

That’s it.

HOW HAND SANITIZERS WORK

If you are interested in learning how sanitizers work, this short video explains it all very well.

A DEEPER LOOK AT HAND SANITIZERS

Dr. OZ and Dr. Roshini Raj share valuable information about using hand sanitizers.

ARE HAND SANITIZERS BETTER THAN HAND WASHING?

The short answer is no. Hand washing is the better option for cleaning hands and removing germs; however, hand sanitizers are more convenient and portable for when we are out and about.

So. To protect ourselves and our families, it is useful to know that hand washing trumps hand sanitizing but both are useful.

Dr. Raj mentions in the video above that overuse of hand sanitizer isn’t ideal because all germs aren’t harmful – a lesson I’m finding difficult to accept right now because I have a toddler in school that brings home more than just artwork more often than I’d like. Mom life.

Ok. I’ll end this post here.

I  just wanted to put something together for the moms wondering about the shortage of hand sanitizers and how to protect themselves when hand washing isn’t available. This is a recipe that is simple and worth knowing, even when there isn’t a rapidly spreading virus. Because kids. 😉

Wishing you and your family good health!
